EXPRESSIVE PORTRAIT PAINTING - WORKSHOP

$150.00
SOLD OUT

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21ST

10AM - 4PM

INSTRUCTOR: Shannon Vaught

PREREQUISITES: None, but some painting experience is recommended

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

What is the difference between expressing and purely representing the subject matter? How can we evoke a feeling or a capture a moment through portraiture instead of simply copying what’s in front of us?

Portrait painting is a tradition dating back thousands of years; transcending civilizations, time, and even technological advancements such as photography and AI - advancements that many saw as the demise of this practice. But portraiture has endured.

Portrait painting is human. The value of a paintings physicality and an artists personal touch cannot be replicated or replaced. The lens that an artist perceives the world through is wholly theirs, and therefore how they chose to translate that reality into a painting is inherently unique.

In this workshop, we will explore this philosophy and employ technical skills to support our notions in one alla prima portrait painting which we will start and finish together over the duration of the workshop.

Students will learn or refresh their knowledge of fundamentals such as drawing, color and value while learning to break the same rules when it serves the vision for the piece.
